Sozopol

Sozopol (4 987) is located 31 km southeast from Burgas and 421 km southeast from Sofia. The city is situated on a small rocky peninsula on the most southern part of Burgas Bay. It is divided in Old and New city and inbetween there is a Sea Garden. The old city is situated on “Skamni Cape” connected by artificial sea bank and touching the waters of island “St.Cyricus” which is 250 m northwest from Sozopol. The peninsula “Budjaka” and Bay “Kavatsi” are on the southern border of the city. In the aquatory of Sozopol Bay are ”St.Thomas island”,“ St.Ivan island” and close to it the small “St.Peter island”. The city has lots of sightseeings to offer, old churches with ancient icons and magnificent woodcarving iconostases. The architecture of the houses in old town from the Renaissance period makes Sozopol an unique place to visit today. One of the houses called “The House of Dimitri Laskaridis”- a fish trader, today is an art gallery. The other famous house is “The House of Anna Trendafilova” more popular like ”The House with the sun”. Old cobble stone streets where the old ladies are sitting and knitting, selling fig jam or just talking, all of them are part of 3 century history. Interesting places for visiting are the Art Gallery and the Archaeological Museum. Every year in the beginning of September  is organized the international Art festival “Apolonia”.
