Hissar
Location
The Hissar resort is located in the centre of Bulgaria, on the southern slopes of the Sredna Gora mountain range, 40 km to the north of Plovdiv and 140 km to the east of Sofia. The elevation is 360 m above the sea level.
Climate
The climate is temperate-continental. The region is covered from the air masses by mountain ranges. The winter is warm and mild without snow. The spring comes early. The average summer temperature is plus 22˚ С. The annual average air humidity is 70%. The fogs are rather rare. Typically there are two peaks of humidity: June and November. The maximum number of sunny days per year is 280. The town is ecologically clean. There are no industries in it and in adjacent area. There is a lot of greenery in the town and around it.
The history of the balneotherapy in Hissar town
The archaeological excavations have shown that even 5000 years B.C. there existed settlements near the Hissar mineral springs. Later on there settle the Thracians and then the Romans. In 293 A.C. the Roman emperor Diocletian visits the settlement and orders to fence the town about with walls (it still exists) and declares the hot-springs as emperor’s property. The town was name Diocletianopolis and turned into well-known resort were the Roman patricians would rest. In 1976 a national archaeological reserve with monuments from the Roman époque was created in Hissar.
Mineral waters
There are 22 mineral springs in the territory of Hissar. Their temperature varies from 37 to 52˚ C. The physicochemical properties of the waters are as follows: transparent, colorless, pleasing to the taste and with no smell. The waters are of light mineralization (salt content 200-270 mg/l), of magmatic and infiltration origin related to rock massif formation, sodium-hydrocarbonate and sulphate, rich in metasilicate acid, fluorine, radon (10-165 Em), pH – 7,6-9,02. There are over 20 microelements in the water. The intensity of flow is 4000 l/sec.
